Street Fighter x Mega Man to be released as a free download for PC by Capcom

Fan-made games are the best. Looking forward to this one!

VG247’s Stephany Nunneley:

Street Fighter x Mega Man was created and developed by Seow Zong Hui, a Singapore native. It features Mega Man traversing through an 8-bit world featuring eight original Street Fighter-themed levels and bosses inspired by the the fighting series. Each boss character utilizes its individual strategies and special moves against Mega Man.

OUYA Dev Consoles to Ship on Time!

The OUYA is looking less and less like vaporware. I’m glad to see that something I invested money in is coming to life. I don’t normally throw my money at Kickstarter projects, but I thought the OUYA was something incredibly special. I’m looking forward to receiving mine in early 2013!

On the OUYA website, JulesKane writes:

To the hundreds of developers who backed us through Kickstarter to get their hands on our advance dev consoles: Mark your calendars! On December 28, they leave the factory and should arrive within a couple of days (we’ve heard that Turkey and Russia might take a bit longer). Yes, we are shipping these to you on time, as promised.

Battle Keep is My Next Game

I’ve been holding Battle Keep’s website in a browser tab for nearly 3 weeks. I love the way this game looks and I’m really excited to throw my money at Last 17.

IndieGames.com’s Cassandra Khaw:

I’m not really sure how we missed this the first time around. However, it looks like Last 17, who were previously responsible for the excellent Populous-inspired Reprisal, have been hard at work developing Battle Keep.

If you’re interested in seeing more screenshots, Battle Keep has a development Tumblr and a thread on TIGForums.

New Canadian Indie Game Incubator Fills Void Created by Joystick Labs

Looks like it won’t be so hard for indie game developers to find money after all.

Mike Rose of Gamasutra:

The Montreal-based Execution Labs has raised $1.4 million through venture capital funding, and is headed up by Jason Della Rocca, a former director of the International Game Developers Association, Alexandre Pelletier-Normand, most recently head of deployment at Gameloft, and Keith Katz, previously VP of monetization at OpenFeint.

The start-up is offering what it describes as a “first-of-its-kind hybrid game incubator and go-to-market accelerator,” as it looks to make the process of funding and creating games much more manageable for indie teams.

How Wii U & Nintendo Changed Scribblenauts

In this interview by Polygon, Jeremiah Slaczka takes readers through 5th Cell’s game development process and discusses the challenges of designing a launch title. Scribblenauts Unlimited may be one of the most exciting games for the Wii U.

Wesley Fenlon:

For 5th Cell, this is new. Though the studio has been developing games for nearly 10 years, Scribblenauts Unlimited represents a trio of intimidating milestones. It’s the first launch title 5th Cell has created, meaning it’s the first time it’s dealt with the headaches and unknowns of pre-release hardware. It’s 5th Cell’s first major console release, in fact: the developer has never shipped a game on a disc. Scariest of all, Scribblenauts Unlimited isn’t just a Wii U game — it’s launching simultaneously on Wii U and 3DS and hitting PC a mere week later.

Listening to Creative Director Jeremiah Slaczka describe the development process, though, those milestones sound more exciting than frightening. And if the Wii U hadn’t come along, Scribblenauts Unlimited may have been a dramatically different game. If it existed at all.

Hotline Miami May Be Coming to PSN & Smartphones

Everyone keeps telling me to play this game, and I just might if it gets ported to the PS VITA.

From BeefJack:

Creator Jonatan Söderström spoke to Pocket Gamer, said he’s “been talking to Sony” about a releasing the PC game on PS3 and Vita. “We would need someone to port it for us,” Jonatan added.

Söderström also said he would consider porting a version onto smartphones, saying: “it would be interesting to see if it was possible to get it to play well on a touchscreen device.”

Joystick Labs Shuts Down, Indie Devs Once Again in Monetary Limbo

Looks like someone learned that the indie gaming scene is tougher than the startup scene.

The group blamed a harsh independent video game climate for shutting down the program, saying that getting a digital game noticed is more difficult than it had realized.

“It has become very difficult for an independent developer to get noticed,” managing director John Austin told local New England-area outlet The News & Observer. “For every Angry Birds, there are literally tens of thousands of great companies not getting noticed.”

Borderlands Legends Leaked for iOS

VG247’s Dave Cook:

The advert was found by IGN, and it states that players will be able to control Brick, Roland, Mordecai and Lilith as they face off against waves of enemies.

It also has randomised missions, 36 unique powers, a cover system and ‘Fight For Your Life’ mode. There are XP rewards, levelling and of course a shit-ton of weapons.

Mind explode. Even better news: it’s supposed to be release by the end of this month. I really hope a compatibility pack won’t ruin my experience this time.

Every Game Kickstarter Backer’s Worst Dream Comes True

Develop’s Craig Chapple regarding Haunts: The Manse Macabre‘s dire situation:

Taking to the game’s Kickstarter page to reveal the bad news, creator Rick Dakan said the principal cause for the “dire condition” of the project was that there were no longer any programmers working on it.

The game’s lead programmer has moved on to work back at Google, as had previously been planned, and no longer had enough spare time to make progress on the title.

The second programmer on the project also quit the game entirely to take another job, with Dakan claiming the developer no longer wanted to work on the title in his spare time.

Here’s hoping they find new developers quickly. Maybe they should consider backing the What’s in a Game? Kickstarter so they can get beta access to Gameifesto.

Third-Party SNES-style Wii U Pro Controller Appears Online

I am totally in love with this. I don’t know if I’m getting a Wii U, but this makes me want one more.

Mark Raby of Geek.com:

The “Wii U Controller – SNES Version” has appeared on the website of Australian video game retailer EB Games. It has a price tag of 48 Australian dollars ($49.50), making it around $30 cheaper than the regular Pro controller. Interestingly enough, this year marks the 20th anniversary of the Super NES system in Australia.

Of course, this is a third-party controller so there is always the risk that it will not perform as well as the official Nintendo version, but this is most definitely going to appeal to the long-standing Nintendo faithful. It carries a release date of November 30, the same date as the launch of the Wii U in Australia.

Child Labor Was Used to Produce Nintendo’s Wii U

Hooray! Internships are popping up in China with the same (if not worse) poor working conditions as America! How nice of Nintendo to help children around the world advance their careers in such an inspiring way.

Game Rant’s Ben Kendrick:

According to a segment aired during the “Voice of China” program on China National Radio, Foxconn utilized children ranging in age from fourteen to sixteen in their Wii U production. The children were brought into the company through High School-level internship programs where they could receive credit toward their diplomas for work in the factories. However, many of the interns have reported that they were strong-armed into working lengthy overnight hours and/or physically demanding labor – threatened with the loss of their internship (as well as school expulsion) if they didn’t comply.
